Apple has released a significant security update for iPhones and iPads to address newly discovered vulnerabilities in the system software. The issue was brought to light by researchers at the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab, who found that the flaw was being actively exploited to deliver commercial spyware known as Pegasus, developed by the Israeli company NSO Group.
Although Pegasus is typically used to target dissidents, journalists, and political opponents, ordinary users are advised to update their devices immediately, according to Citizen Lab.
To install the update on your iPhone or iPad, follow these steps:
- Open Settings.
- Select “General” followed by “Software Update.”
- Look for the iOS 16.6.1 software update and tap to begin the installation.
If you do not see the update, follow these additional steps:
- Go back to the General page.
- Tap on “About” to check your iOS version number.
- If your current version is 16.6.1, you already have the update installed.
- If your device is still using version 16.6 or an earlier version, repeat the above steps.
- If the update is still not appearing, try restarting your phone.
- If the update still does not appear, ensure that you have a stable internet connection and wait for a short while before attempting again.
It is crucial to stay proactive about protecting your device’s security, so be sure to update as soon as possible.
