Euro area trade deficit stood at €4.6 billion in December 2021 as the entire European Union posted a trade deficit of €10 billion.
- Exports of goods from the Eurozone to the rest of the world were at €218.7 billion in December 2021, increasing 14.1% YoY, as imports rose 36.7% on an annual basis to reach €223.3 billion.
- Intra-euro area trade soared 27.8% from December 2020 to €191.9 billion in the same month in 2021.
- On an annual basis, the European Union’s exports rose 12.5% to €198.2 billion in December 2021 while imports stood at €208.2 billion in the same month, rising 41.8% compared to December 2020.
- Intra-EU trade expanded by 25.3% in December compared to the same period the prior year.
In 2021, the highest increase for both export and import flows was posted in the energy sector, attributable to the worsening of the EU energy deficit.
