The flash estimate of the consumer confidence index dropped slightly in the EU and the euro area compared to December 2021.
- The consumer confidence index at -10.0 points (EU) and -8.5 points (euro area) is way below its pre-Covid level and heading towards its long-term average.
- In the same period, the Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) dropped further in both the EU (-2.1 points) and the euro area (-2.3 points) but remained at historically high levels.
The Employment Expectations Indicator (EEI) dropped by 1.4 points to 114.2 in the EU and by 1.6 points to 114.0 in the euro area for the first time since January last year.
