Facebook and Instagram are taking steps to address the challenge of distinguishing between real and artificial intelligence (AI)-generated images on their platforms. As part of a collaborative effort with industry partners, Meta (formerly known as Facebook) announced its plan to establish technical standards that will facilitate the identification of AI-generated images, and potentially extend to video and audio content as well.
The efficacy of this initiative, however, remains to be seen in the face of the increasing prevalence of AI-generated content that can have detrimental effects, such as spreading election misinformation or creating nonconsensual fake nudes of celebrities.
Gili Vidan, an assistant professor of information science at Cornell University, acknowledged that this move by Facebook and Instagram signals their recognition of the issue of fake content online. While it may be quite effective in flagging a significant portion of AI-generated content produced with commercial tools, it is unlikely to detect every instance, Vidan noted.
Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, has not provided an exact timeline for when the labels will be implemented. However, he emphasized that it will be in “the coming months” and will be available in multiple languages, particularly with important elections taking place worldwide.
In a blog post, Clegg expressed the importance of clarifying the distinction between human-created and synthetic content as the boundaries between them continue to blur.
