Facebook users have a limited time left to take part in a $725 million class action settlement related to the infamous Cambridge Analytica data scandal. The parent company of Facebook, Meta Platforms, reached an agreement to resolve the case in late 2022. The lawsuit accused the company of allowing entities such as Cambridge Analytica to access users’ personal information without their consent.
The deadline for U.S. Facebook users to claim their portion of the settlement is Friday, August 25. This opportunity is available to users who were active on the platform between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022. The exact amount received by each individual will depend on the number of people who fill out a form on the dedicated website, facebookuserprivacysettlement.com.
The settlement agreement indicates that approximately 250 million to 280 million users are covered by this case. Claimants have the option to receive their share of the settlement as a prepaid card, through direct deposit, or via popular payment apps like Venmo or Zelle.
It’s important to note that Facebook has previously settled with the Federal Trade Commission in 2019. The company agreed to pay a hefty $5 billion penalty and adhere to new restrictions on how it handles user data.
