Nucor, a prominent company in the steel industry, is making significant strides towards utilizing renewable energy sources in Kentucky. Recently, Nucor entered into a power purchase agreement with Sebree Solar, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources, to acquire 250 megawatts of renewable energy.
Sebree Solar: A Groundbreaking Project
Sebree Solar, an innovative two-phase solar project located in Henderson County, Kentucky, represents an exciting development in the pursuit of clean energy. This project aims to generate up to an impressive 400 megawatts of American-produced energy. Construction for the first phase, Sebree Solar I, is scheduled to commence in the fall of 2023. Notably, Nucor plans to source the steel required for this project from their very own Nucor Steel Gallatin facility in Ghent, Kentucky. The anticipated date for the commercial operation of Sebree Solar I is December 2025.
Green River Solar: Another Remarkable Project
Additionally, Nucor’s collaboration with NextEra Energy Resources extends to the Green River Solar project, which is set to be built and operated by a NextEra subsidiary. This solar venture will be established in Meade and Breckinridge counties and has a projected capacity of generating up to 200 megawatts of electricity. Fascinatingly, the steel utilized for the racking system that supports the solar panels in this project will also be sourced from Nucor Steel Gallatin, ensuring the employment of locally produced Kentucky steel.
Nucor’s commitment to supporting these innovative solar projects showcases their dedication to sustainable practices and reducing their environmental impact.
