Orders for durable goods such as appliances, computers, and cars rose in April, driven by an increase in new aircraft orders.
- New orders for products meant to last at least three years rose by 0.4% to a seasonally adjusted $265.3 billion in April after a revised 0.6% jump in March. April marked the sixth increase in seven months.
- Nondefense aircraft and parts orders increased by 4.3%, bouncing back from an 18.1% plunge in March.
- Excluding defense, orders for long-lasting goods increased by 0.3%.
Strong consumer spending has bolstered manufacturing demand, despite continuing supply-chain disruptors due to the war in Ukraine and Covid 19-related shutdowns in China.
