Israeli protesters took to the streets on Tuesday, blocking highways leading to Jerusalem, Haifa, and Tel Aviv in a series of demonstrations against the government’s controversial planned judicial overhaul. The protests come after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s parliamentary coalition granted initial approval for a bill aimed at limiting the Supreme Court’s oversight powers, a move that has sparked widespread opposition and divided the nation.
In a bold statement against the government’s actions, 300 reservists from the military’s cyber unit signed a letter declaring their refusal to volunteer for service, expressing concerns that providing sensitive cyber abilities to what they perceive as a “criminal government” could be detrimental to Israel’s democratic foundations. According to their letter, the government has shown a clear determination to undermine the state, and therefore, they believe it is crucial not to support such actions.
During the course of the protests, police arrested 24 individuals for disturbances caused by their involvement in the demonstrations. The ongoing unrest reflects the deep division within Israeli society regarding the government’s judicial overhaul plans and highlights the determination of activists to safeguard the nation’s democratic principles.
