The annual CES tech trade show in Las Vegas is one of the most highly anticipated events in the tech industry. Hosted by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), this year’s CES promises to be bigger and better than ever. In their press conference, CTA revealed some exciting tech trends that we can expect to see in the coming months.

One of the standout announcements from CTA is their projection that U.S. consumer tech spending will experience a 2.8% growth in 2024. This comes as welcome news following a two-year decline. The forecast includes a 2.3% increase in hardware revenue, bouncing back from a 5.4% decline in the previous year, and a 3.8% growth in services, showing improvement from the 2.4% growth seen in 2023.

This year, the spotlight at CES will be on artificial intelligence (AI) and its diverse applications. From AI semiconductors to AI-powered cars and even AI-enhanced barbecue grills, there is no doubt that AI will dominate the show.

During the Tech Trends presentation, which took place at the Mandalay Bay hotel, the atmosphere was electric with journalists eagerly awaiting the latest updates. While the overall outlook for AI and technology was positive, a recent survey conducted by CTA revealed some noteworthy insights into consumers’ perceptions of AI.

One question asked consumers to provide one-word reactions to AI. The most common response, given by 42% of participants, was “innovative.” This was closely followed by “futuristic” at 36%. Additionally, 35% described AI as “intelligent,” although some found this description repetitive. However, there were also some concerns raised by consumers. Approximately 30% considered AI to be “unpredictable,” while 23% found it “scary.” Additionally, 21% viewed AI as “impersonal,” and 19% considered it “intimidating.”

Despite these reservations, the overall excitement surrounding AI and its potential is palpable at CES. This year’s showcase promises to be a platform for groundbreaking advancements in technology, and we can’t wait to witness the future unfold. Stay tuned for more updates from CES 2024!

    Distinctive Concerns Surrounding AI

    Introduction

Privacy and AI: A Major Concern

A staggering 65% of consumers expressed strong apprehension towards privacy and AI, with many stating that they were “extremely concerned” or “very concerned.” This highlights the urgent need to address privacy issues surrounding AI technologies.

AI-Powered Disinformation: A Cause for Alarm

Another pressing concern, shared by 63% of respondents, is the issue of AI-powered disinformation. Particularly relevant in a presidential election year, tackling this challenge is essential to ensure the integrity and transparency of democratic processes.

    Safety as a Top Priority

A significant proportion of consumers (60%) emphasized the importance of safety when it comes to AI. Ensuring that AI technologies are designed and implemented with utmost security measures is crucial to build trust among users.

    Job Losses and AI Adoption

Adoption of AI has led to concerns about potential job losses, as noted by 59% of surveyed consumers. It is vital to address this concern proactively by exploring ways to mitigate the impact of AI on employment and identify new opportunities for the workforce.

The Role of Government in Regulation

To address the growing concerns surrounding AI, an overwhelming majority (74%) of those surveyed expressed that the federal government should take responsibility for regulating AI safety. This calls for the development of comprehensive regulations that safeguard privacy, ensure transparency, and promote the responsible use of AI.

Government Initiatives: Biden Administration’s Executive Order

In October 2023, in response to the rising concerns around AI safety, the Biden Administration issued an extensive executive order. This order outlined a series of actions aimed at regulating the safety of generative AI software and their underlying large-language models. It is a crucial step towards addressing the challenges surrounding AI.

    The Need for Consensus

While the need for government regulation is evident, historical precedents demonstrate the challenges of reaching a consensus on tech regulation. The absence of a nationwide digital-data-privacy policy and the ongoing debate surrounding the regulation of social media platforms highlight the complexities involved. Nevertheless, consumers are increasingly calling for effective regulation that can navigate these challenges and ensure the responsible use of AI.

In conclusion, as concerns surrounding AI continue to grow, it is imperative to prioritize issues such as privacy, safety, job losses, and AI-powered disinformation. The call for government intervention and regulation is stronger than ever. By working towards comprehensive regulations, policymakers can mitigate the risks associated with AI and foster an environment that promotes responsible AI innovation.
